What is a portrait? In Reichert’s work, the portrait is an introduction to the mysteries within. “I am most captivated by the mysteries within individuals. As far as inspiration, that is my biggest factor, a sense of the mysterious.” Reichert’s technique allows him to create the sense that the face (or figure) is not just a “scene’, it is a portal to an undiscovered state of mind. He starts by painting his canvas black. With exquisite control of the pallet knife, he then layers markings, white over black, black over white, again and again, playing with transparencies, charting careful lines then breaking them all up, until he feels that the image is exciting, deep and balanced. “I would like for people who view my portraits and figure studies to come away feeling the care behind each piece and to be excited by the worlds within, the abstractions and micro paintings.”
