Angelica Verkeenko

Angelica Verkeenko

Angelica Verkeenko was born in St. Petersburg, Russia in 1971. She studied first at the St. Petersburg Academy of Art and Industry then the St. Petersburg Academy of Theatre Arts. After graduation Angelica worked as a costume designer for the ballet and opera.

Recently she has translated her sketches for costumes into intricate collaged works of art. Each piece is assembled from individual pieces of foil which are affixed to the ground, burnished and excised. The foil becomes almost sculptural.

While some of her pieces are based directly on productions where she was the costume designer, others are drawn from archetypes of 18th century French courtiers.
